What is a Provenance Challenge and how do I file one?

Verification & Disputes

A Provenance Challenge is the formal mechanism for contesting the human origin of a Humark-registered asset. Any person or organization can file a challenge. You do not need a Humark account.

Valid Challenge Evidence

  • Matching generative model outputs (e.g., identical Midjourney or DALL-E outputs with known prompt/seed)
  • Identical prompt seeds or generation metadata
  • Timestamp inconsistencies suggesting the work predates the creator's registration
  • Reverse image search showing prior publication by a different author

How to File a Challenge

Email disputes@humark.id with:

  • The asset hash or Humark registry URL
  • Your supporting evidence (screenshots, model outputs, metadata)
  • A brief explanation of why you believe the registration is fraudulent
  • Your contact information

What Happens Next

Within 48 hours, the challenged asset is flagged as humark.status: disputed in the public registry. The registrant is notified and given 14 days to respond with counter-evidence.

If the challenge is substantiated or the registrant fails to respond, the registration may be revoked, the account terminated, and documented evidence compiled for legal referral.

If the registrant provides sufficient counter-evidence, the dispute is resolved and the disputed flag is removed.

All challenge records are maintained permanently and are accessible to law enforcement upon lawful request.
